The Greek National Opera hasn’t presented Wagner’s Lohengrin for more than half a century, since January 1965. This impressive German Romantic opera returns to the GNO for the first time with a full musical ensemble, unfeasible at the Olympia Theatre where it was first staged due to orchestra-pit space constraints. Following its successful Tristan and Isolde, the GNO presents another Wagner masterpiece shortly before staging the demanding Ring cycle at its new SNFCC facilities. Lohengrin is staged in the successful production directed by award-winning British director Antony McDonald. A divinely-sent, unknown knight rescues Elsa von Brabant on condition she never asks his origin or name; while Elsa appears to have found happiness, dark forces conspire against her, inspiring some of Wagner’s loveliest and best-known music, including the famous wedding march that opens Act III. Tenor Peter Wedd sings the demanding title role; GNO soloist Dimitri Platanias sings a Wagnerian role for the first time. Conducted by Myron Michailidis, the GNO’s Artistic Director.
