Alternative Stage
The events, David Greig’s 2013 play with music and lyrics by John Browne, was presented at the GNO Alternative Stage 10-13 December 2020, as a co-production with seven Municipal and Regional Theatres (Corfu, Kozani, Serres, Crete, Kalamata, Agrinio, Thessaly) and Ferodo Bridges, directed and translated by Alexandros Raptotasios. Inspired by Anders Breivik’s 2011 massacre of 69 people in Norway, the work explores the limits of forgiveness in the face of monstrosity: Claire, a teacher who runs an amateur chorus of immigrants and socially vulnerable people, is the sole survivor when an armed young local man opens fire during rehearsal, and she is left desperately seeking to understand why. A political work examining the rise of the extreme right, neofascism and xenophobia, the production featured a different local amateur chorus at each performance — Libro Coro (10, 12 Dec), the GNO Intercultural Chorus (11 Dec), and the Rainbow Singers (13 Dec) — reflecting the collaboration between the Alternative Stage and regional theatres nationwide.
