The Educational & Social Actions of the National Opera continue this year, with the support of the Ioannis S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the cycle of artistic workshops in four Correctional Institutions throughout Greece with the main goal of transforming the space of the Correctional Institution into a field of free expression, creativity and meaningful communication.

The workshops are not limited only to teaching artistic skills, but aspire to function as tools of empowerment, psychological support and social cohesion. Through music, dance, voice and group experience, participants are given the opportunity to discover new ways of communication, to cultivate cooperation and discipline skills, to develop their self-esteem and to strengthen their mental resilience against the difficulties of daily life within the Correctional Institution. At the same time, through the coexistence of people of different cultures, the groups are transformed into fields of intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and mutual respect.

For the 2025/26 season, four workshops are planned: music at the Agia Chania Correctional Facility, dance at the Eleonas Women’s Correctional Facility in Thebes, and music and singing at the Diavata and Nigrita Correctional Facilities. Each of them draws inspiration from the experiences, cultural backgrounds and personal stories of the participants, creating an environment in which the artistic act becomes an occasion for personal development, social interaction and the cultivation of hope for the future.

Participants, using stringed and percussion instruments, will travel to the traditional musics of the wider Mediterranean. Through a melodic journey to their homelands, they will remember, converse and work collectively.

In Eleonas, the prisoners will have the opportunity to experience choral works of ancient Greek drama and connect them with their own narratives and experiences. Through the three basic elements of a choir – movement, voice and speech – they will work individually and collectively, discovering the power of the group and enriching the process with elements of their multicultural identity. Thus, dance becomes a means of personal expression and a lever for social reintegration, allowing the participants to redefine themselves through creation.

Music and singing workshop

February – June 2026

In Diavata and Nigrita, the participants will be introduced to the process of musical creation through singing. The material will come from them, through the composition of lyrics and melodies that draw inspiration from their personal traditions and memories. With voice and natural expressiveness as a starting point, they will cultivate self-expression and collaboration skills, learn new techniques and create collective songs that compose a mosaic of sounds, rhythms and languages. This process culminates in a performance, where the group presents its artistic result, confirming the power of art to unite and heal.

In this way, the workshops function not only as creative outlets but also as bridges of reintegration. The development of artistic and communication skills, the cultivation of trust and the experience of collective effort constitute the foundations for a smoother return to society.
