How is musical composition changing in the age of Artificial Intelligence? What does it mean to be a composer or performer today? And how can technology become a fertile tool for creation, without reproducing stereotypes or limiting imagination?

With these questions as a starting point, and on the basis of the new collaboration between the Greek National Opera and the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, pianist, musicologist and creative technologist Pavlos Antoniadis and director Themelis Glynatsis open a dynamic dialogue around musical creation today. They invite composers and performers to explore, through a series of weekly workshops, the intermediate space between composition, performance and improvisation – but also the “latent space” revealed through artificial intelligence models.

By combining traditional media – such as scores and drawings – with digital tools, the team at Latent Space will rediscover what concepts such as interpretation, authenticity, artificiality and personal signature mean, in an era where Generative AI is transforming the boundaries of artistic creation. More specifically, participants will have the opportunity to examine and discuss the transformation and translation of narrative, historical, aesthetic or ideological material into musical theatre dramaturgy. At the same time, they will explore how the choices of an artistic organization shape its repertoire, what “good taste” means and how the dominant perception of interpretation and authenticity can be overturned.

Participation in the workshops does not require prior technological experience. With the help of cutting-edge interactive technologies, participants will navigate a variety of musical and textual materials by collecting and transforming data on movement, sound, image and touch. They will learn about specialized software, experiment with sensors and motion analysis technologies and become familiar with the specially designed setup. Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration of the GNO with the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, participants will have access to advanced technological equipment, while as part of the workshops, a visit to the Center for Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality on the Arta Campus will also take place.

The entire process will form the creative background for the creation of eight original works, where artistic research will be combined with experimentation and new technologies. Alongside musical and sound experimentation and contact with technology, the meetings will give participants the opportunity to theoretically process their pieces, explore sound dramaturgy as well as the ways of transcribing a primary material into sound and/or music.

The program will culminate with the presentation of new works that will emerge during the workshops. The new creations will be performed by Pavlos Antoniadis, Associate Professor of Music Communication and Technology of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, and other artists at the GNO Alternative Stage on May 6 and 7, 2026.
