Weisse Rose (1986) by German composer Udo Zimmermann received its Greek national premiere at the GNO Alternative Stage, conducted by Nikos Vasiliou and directed by Themelis Glynatsis. Based on the true story of anti-Nazi student group ‘The White Rose’ (Die Weisse Rose) at the University of Munich, whose fourth manifesto led to the arrest and 1943 guillotine execution of siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, Zimmermann’s reworked 1986 version (from an original 1967 opera) limits the action to the two siblings awaiting execution, blending historical re-enactment with a deeply personal exploration of morality, death and political responsibility. Director Glynatsis frames the piece around the siblings’ solitude and an ambiguous, near-mystical space between memory and religious vision, ending in a hidden landscape of emotion, freedom and disobedience.
