Magnus Eroticus / Broken consort transcription
Manos Hadjidakis
Alternative Stage
Magnus Eroticus / Broken consort transcription reimagined Manos Hadjidakis’ song cycle Magnus Eroticus (1972), one of the most important in Greek music history, through the lens of English baroque music, sung in an English Restoration-era translation to highlight its universality. Gambist, director and visual artist Andreas Linos led an ensemble of musicians in this paradoxical yet attractive reading, using the typical English baroque ‘Broken consort’ instrumentation. Hadjidakis himself described the work (in a 1972 note) as ‘dressed in its own clothes… a mass for Magnus Eroticus’, an unbreakable song cycle of Greek poets’ verses forming a strange yet natural litany about human communication beyond mere sensuality.
