Akhmatova’s Requiem & The Anniversary
Haris Vrondos
Alternative Stage
Haris Vrondos, one of the most consistent voices in Greek music theatre of recent decades, presented two of his one-act chamber operas together in a single performance at the GNO Alternative Stage in November 2020. Akhmatova’s Requiem, based on the poetry of Anna Akhmatova and Haris Vlavianos, begins with the great Russian poetess’ life and raises questions about the relationship between art and power, depicting the extermination, imprisonment and exile of poets and artists who did not submit to socialist-realist doctrine, paralleled with the persecution of decadent artists (many Jewish) under the Nazi regime. The Anniversary, with libretto by Vrondos and poet Yannis Ioannidis based on writer Yannis Beratis, plays between incidents of the Greek Civil War and their perpetuation in historical memory.
