With the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the Greek National Opera significantly strengthened its artistic outreach, expanded its international presence and developed new ways of engaging with audiences in Greece and abroad.
The donation helped create new momentum for the organisation, supporting international co-productions and collaborations with leading opera houses and festivals, the involvement of acclaimed artists from different fields, the commissioning and presentation of new works, and the promotion of contemporary Greek creation.
At the same time, the GNO developed a broad range of artistic and digital initiatives, including opera, ballet and music theatre productions, concerts, interdisciplinary performances, online festivals, tours and screenings in Greece and abroad. Through these initiatives, the GNO’s work gained greater visibility, reached wider audiences and created new points of connection with the public.
A key part of this development was the expansion of the GNO’s digital presence through the creation and evolution of GNO TV, the Greek National Opera’s digital platform. Through GNO TV, productions and activities became accessible to audiences in Greece and internationally, extending the reach of the organisation’s artistic work beyond the physical space of the stage.
The GNO’s international profile was further enhanced through targeted communication campaigns, presence in print and digital media, collaborations with international channels and platforms, and the systematic promotion of its work to audiences beyond Greece.
The donation also played an important role in strengthening the people and structures of the organisation. Through scholarships, collaborations with emerging artists and professionals, and initiatives supporting artistic development and professional training, the GNO invested in the next generation and in the long-term sustainability of its artistic work.
This outward-looking vision continues to evolve through newer initiatives that deepen the GNO’s relationship with its audiences. Opera Club creates a new community of friends of the Greek National Opera, offering its members a more direct and privileged connection with the organisation. The new GNO website enhances the organisation’s public digital presence and makes it easier for audiences to access its artistic programme, activities, services and wider digital ecosystem. At the same time, the ‘Opera for All’ initiative broadens access to opera and the lyrical arts, bringing more people into contact with opera, ballet and the wider work of the GNO.
In this way, the contribution of the SNF is reflected not only in the GNO’s artistic production and international visibility, but also in the ongoing expansion of its relationship with the public: on stage, through education, in the digital sphere, and through access and participation. By 2026, the GNO has strengthened its position as a contemporary, open and internationally engaged cultural organisation, with a meaningful connection to society and its audiences.
