The Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, taking musical theater in all its possible forms as its starting point, has already evolved into a major cultural institution, whose identity is reflected in the threefold mission it serves: contemporary creation, education, and social impact. Equally important is the emphasis on original creation, through a systematic commissioning policy, and on fostering a creative dialogue between emerging and established artists in music and theater. The director Alexandros Evklidis served as Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera’s Alternative Stage from February 2017 to January 2022; who subsequently served as Head of Artistic Programming for the Alternative Stage until August 2025.
The trial operation of the Greek National Opera’s Alternative Stage, with a capacity of 300–400 seats (depending on the production’s layout), began in the second half of the 2016–2017 season, following the official handover of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the Greek government. It is a versatile hall with exceptional acoustics, equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support high-quality performances, as well as for encouraging experimentation and innovation.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is the founding donor of the Greek National Opera’s Alternative Stage, which, in addition to an initial donation for the relocation of the GNO—which served as the catalyst for the institution’s creation (initially under the guidance of Giorgos Koumentakis)— continues to support the Alternative Stage, as well as the GNO’s Educational and Social Initiatives, with additional donations, recognizing their importance for the organization’s new era at the SNFCC.
