The Alternative Stage of the National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, having as its starting point musical theater in all its possible forms, has already evolved into an important cultural institution, the stigma of which is evident in the triptych of goals it serves: contemporary creation, education, social reciprocity. Equally important is the emphasis on primary creation, through a systematic policy of commissions, and on the development of a creative dialogue between younger and more established artists of music and theater. The Artistic Director of the GNO Alternative Stage from February 2017 to January 2022 was the director Alexandros Euclid, who then served as the Head of Artistic Programming of the Alternative Stage until August 2025.
The trial operation of the GNO Alternative Stage, with a capacity of 300-400 seats (depending on the layout of the show), began in the second half of the 2016-2017 season, after the official handover of the SNFCC by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the Greek State. It is a multi-format hall with excellent acoustics, which has the appropriate infrastructure to support high-level shows, but also to encourage experimentation and innovation.
The founding donor of the GNO Alternative Stage is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which, in addition to an initial donation for the relocation of the GNO, which was the catalyst for the creation of the institution (initially under the guidance of George Koumendakis), continues to support the Alternative Stage, as well as the GNO’s Educational and Social Actions, with additional donations, recognizing their importance for the new era of the organization at the SNFCC.
