The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a public space offering free access and active public participation in a wide range of cultural, educational, athletic, environmental, and recreational events and activities. It includes the facilities of the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park, one of the largest green spaces in Athens, covering an area of 210 stremmata.
Designed by the architectural firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the SNFCC is a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation [www.SNF.org] . It was completed in 2016, and in February 2017, the SNF handed over the SNFCC to the Greek state and, by extension, to Greek society. The SNFCC has received significant international architectural accolades, including the 2018 Award for International Excellence (Award for International Excellence) from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
The creation of the SNFCC represents the largest donation by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation [www.SNF.org], which undertook the entire design, construction, and outfitting of the complex. In addition, the SNF provided a €5 million donation to the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece, respectively, with the aim of supporting the programmatic needs of both organizations and their transition to the SNFCC. Following the handover to Greek society, the SNF announced its commitment to continue actively supporting the SNFCC for five years, with donations totaling €50 million.
The Stavros Niarchos Park is a 210-stremma park with more than 1,400 trees and 300,000 shrubs, a park that serves as a living laboratory for environmental sustainability and, at the same time, a space for sports, recreation, and culture; the Stavros Niarchos Park essentially represents a new approach to the urban outdoor space. The Park invites the public to explore its various areas: to garden in the Vegetable Garden, to experiment in the Music Garden, to exercise on the Track, the Outdoor Sports Area, and of course the seawater Canal; to enjoy concerts at the Glade; to relax in the Maze; and play in the playgrounds. The SNFCC is a model of environmental sustainability on three levels: design & construction, operation, and its impact on the local ecosystem.
The design and construction of the SNFCC, including the Stavros Niarchos Park, have helped reshape the Kallithea area and the Faliro waterfront, breathing new life into a space that had been neglected for many years.
The nature and quality of the events organized, carried out, and hosted here, the free access for all, and the daily dedication of the SNFCC’s staff and partners, have made the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center a landmark for Athens and, by extension, are helping to redefine public space.
At the SNFCC, everyone is welcome without exception; visitors interact both with the space itself and with one another in a unique way, and a mutual relationship of respect has developed between the SNFCC and its visitors.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center S.A. is a public-benefit organization whose purpose is to maintain, operate, and manage the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and the Stavros Niarchos Park, while also developing its own program of cultural, educational, and athletic events. During the 2017–18 period, it organized more than 7,000 free events for the public and recorded over 8,300,000 visits. The SNFCC S.A. is supervised by the Ministry of Finance.
Finally, the new building of the National Library of Greece has modernized an institution dating back to 1832, allowing it to strengthen its research department while expanding its scope from an exclusively research-oriented library to a public resource with no restrictions on use. In its new role, the Library serves visitors of all ages and educational backgrounds, from academic researchers to children and young adults who will form the next generation of users. From the Agora, the open-air public gathering space that connects the National Library of Greece with the Greek National Opera (GNO), the Library’s entrance leads to the large, open reception area, which provides immediate visual orientation to all of its functions. The Lending Department, comprising a significant collection of books and other resources, includes separate areas for adults, teenagers, and children and will offer a wide range of educational and cultural programs. The natural light that floods the entire building creates an open, welcoming environment for individual and collaborative learning. Events and seminars are organized for both children and adults, and the courses also include opportunities for learning through collaborative programs set in the natural environment of the Stavros Niarchos Park.
