The princess and the pea
Ernst Toch
Stavros Niarchos Hall
The princess and the pea, a children’s opera by Austrian composer Ernst Toch (Pulitzer Prize winner for his Third Symphony) based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, first presented in 1927, was staged at the GNO Stavros Niarchos Hall as part of the 20th Century Cycle, a co-production with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Toch employs the musical language of his time alongside traditional forms (arias, duets), and the opera has been part of the repertory of most opera houses worldwide since its immediate success. Director/choreographer Apostolia Papadamaki visualizes Toch’s music for young audiences, with two alternating casts and the participation of GNO Professional School of Dance students, across 8 morning performances (25,27,30 November & 13,14,16,18,19 December 2018).
