Carmen
Georges Bizet
Open-Air Municipal Theatre Of Zografou
Bizet’s legendary opera Carmen, in the GNO’s Suitcase Opera production, visited the Open-air Municipal Theatre of Zografou (12 July 2015, free admission), directed by Angela-Kleopatra Saroglou, who transported the action to modern Spain through the aesthetics of Pedro Almodovar’s filmmaking. The tragic story of Corporal Don José’s fiery feelings for the gypsy girl Carmen was performed in an 80-minute version without intermission, with Greek surtitles, accompanied by piano instead of orchestra as part of the GNO’s flexible touring Suitcase Opera initiative (started 2011) which brings opera to unusual venues such as cultural centres, museums, libraries and archaeological sites.
